-Things To Try Thursdays- All Natural Fruit & Veggie Wash

When you purchase fruit and vegetables from the store do you always wash them? If you don’t you could be ingesting thousands of chemicals and pesticides which of course can lead to the big “C” word. It’s important to arm yourself with the necessary information to overcome advertising strategy in regards to produce. I have been victim several times to bagged lettuce that claims it’s “triple washed”, when in reality it’s harboring millions of
E.coli bacteria. Yes, they may have washed it before it left the facility, but during transport it picked up a few friends. Same goes with fruit.

“What you don’t know can’t hurt you” is a complete falsification in this case. We aren’t speaking about the War of 1812, this is your health. Fruit appears glistening and shiny stacked neatly in its organized display. You travel over and pick out a larger than life apple and orange. You wash the apple, but not the orange. This is equivalent to washing your face, but not brushing your teeth. The orange, with it’s thick and mighty skin has an unseen, ominous sheath lurking about. Pesticides are able to penetrate through the entire surface and into the orange. WHOA! So how can we protect ourselves?

Many of you may think it’s a gimmick, but I use an all natural fruit and veggie wash. You can find these in any local store, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. Make sure they contain grapefruit and lemon juices and are generally non-synthetic. (Otherwise you’d just be adding more fuel to the fire by spraying on more chemicals.) This particular one I purchased from Marshalls has been excellent. I wish I even had a picture of the after results when I washed my blueberries. The water was so cloudy. To think that could have been tainting my body I treat as a holistic temple!

If you do prefer not to go this route, I recommend washing all fruit and veggies with a light antibacterial soap and warm water, scrub for 20-30 seconds, then rinse. But seriously, don’t just assume water will brush off the unwanted. Does plain water help defend us against germs on our hands without the use of soap? Nope. So regardless of what you have previously been conditioned to believe, safeguard your health today!
