Athleta’s Mind Over Madness Yoga in Times Square

As you know, Wednesday was Summer Solstice, a.k.a, for most of us sun/daylight lovers…the LONGEST day of the year. It also could quite arguably have been the hottest (on the east coast at least) with temperatures rising to almost 100 degrees!

So how did I choose to spend the day? Why heading to NYC for free yoga in Times Sqaure of course! I was armed with an artillery of water bottles and sweatbands, but no mat. I really was putting all my eggs in one basket as I just assumed Times Square Alliance/Athleta would have enough mats. Luckily, the moon, sun and stars were all in alignment as I was able to receive my free mat!

It felt hotter than Hades just in the shade, so I knew when I saw the open space where we were going to be setting up would probably feel like I just traveled to the center of earth’s core. (only less magma, more sweat) (Nerd alert: I LOVE GEOLOGY AND THE SCIENCES!)

Times Square Alliance has been partnering with sponsors for 12 years now to bring this magical event to the middle of the big apple. The whole gist behind this year’s theme: Mind Over Madness. (Sponsored by: Athleta, yoga journal, Vitamin water, Smart water, Solstice Sunglasses, Tribe hummus, Mediterranean snacks, Stonyfield organic, In New York, Fresh 102.7) Times Square seems like the perfect place to try this juxtaposition out!

I have honestly never been into yoga. I like living life fast-paced and don’t like holding a warrior pose unless I’m really going to battle. I have tried beginner yoga and absolutely hated it. It’s too delicate and I don’t like when I can hear all of my thoughts instead of everyone else’s.

That being said, I was up for this kind of a challenge. I’ve heard Bikram yoga receive accolades from the celebs and read up on many of the benefits. It’s a bit faster paced and is performed in a “heat room”. Well, we definitely had our heat Wednesday!

I took my boyfriend, Mario with me, as he is huge into fitness and health as well. Could he possibly be the next Ghandi in this picture? Only flexibility and time will tell.

Anyway, we arrived around 11:45 at our designated spot, 47th and Broadway. It was crowded but not sardine-ish yet, so the boyfriend of course took this opp to run and grab us Starbucks. (LOVE HIM for that!) I basically was a well all day yesterday. I must have had 16 glasses of water or more!

It felt like we were roasting in the sun forever, but finally Rajashree Choudhury’s voice was heard. (yoga instructor for the session) She told us this was the largest gathering of people (14,000) ever doing bikram yoga in one place! Let alone Times Square! (I like being a part of history!)

(Oh- P.S.- they had classes going on all day from 7:30 AM until 8:30 PM!)

She went through the basic warm up and then into the bulk of the yoga. Most of the poses I had heard of before, but there were some I was just not attempting in that heat. I think everyone’s favorite was the savasana. Laying down, breeze, and being in the shade? FINALLY! Win, win, win!

Here’s when I started to get bored, tired, and too hot…

These guys had the best view in town!

This guy breaks the record for wearing jeans while working out in 100 degree temps…He stuck with us the ENTIRE hour and a half.

These guys also stuck with us…but for the sport of photographing women’s behinds…CREEPER ALERT! CAUGHT YA!

We also received a small goodie bag– with a Luna bar (Chocolate Peppermint Stick) flavor & Soyjoy (Apple Cinnamon). They also gave us “the sunshine vitamin” (Vitamin D) from Nature Made. There were some coupons from Tribe and Mediterranean Snacks. There were also a TON of offers from yoga studios in the city. I may just have to man up and take the $25 train ride in for one of those!

Disgusting shot of the day: Too much PDA, but I don’t even care because we DID IT! #PROOF

A much needed refueling at Josie’s NYC (Uptown)- Turkey Cheddar Burger with mixed greens and a side of air baked fries (not pictured)

Parting shot of how hot it really was even at almost 9 P.M. (because you haven’t heard this enough the past two days):

Have you ever gone to yoga in Times Square? Do you practice yoga on a daily basis?ย

Peace, love, and yoga!

  1. This is so, so, so cool! What an awesome thing to take part in! I try to practice yoga as much as I can, but it’s usually in the form of DVDs. I would really like to get to classes more often…

    Enjoy your weekend!

Even in the 97 degree heat it was still amazing! Ahh DVD’s…seriously, they are one of life’s greatest inventions!

  2. You could have at least kissed him back ya know! LOL! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’m like you…totally do not care for yoga. I like Pilates instead. However, if I lived closer, I would have loved to have participated in this! Very cool indeed!

lol I know I was in a “I’m too hot and sweaty” mood. Yeah, if you were closer, we’d be hanging constantly! ๐Ÿ™‚
