“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.“
This old adage is ripe with truth, as apples are a natural source of antioxidants, cancer-fighting flavonoids, and also keep cholesterol in check.
I come from a blood line who actually disdain apples. Most everyone in my family doesn’t particularly jump for joy when apples are around. Apple-picking season is one of the greatest times of the year (besides Christmas), and I’ve never even seen a glimmer of excitement in their eyes. Oh well, more for me!
A few years back I started seeing apple butter in trader joe’s. I decided to give it a try and man was I smitten on first taste! (it’s the bottom jar below.)
Apple butter is extremely sweet. It’s definitely NOT the healthiest. I’m sure most of those antioxidants are replaced with tons of sugar and apple juice concentrate in most cases. But…it’s so so so good…in moderation.
I have been slathering apple butter all over my chicken, waffles, salads, and even top of my scrambled eggs! I feel like it could easily qualify as the 8th wonder of the world, or maybe just my current obsession. (I tend to become bored with foods/toppings easily.)
If you’re tired of other condiments and are a huge fan of apples, I urge you to give this a try! Many food stores sell it either in the international/ethnic foods section or near the peanut butter aisle. This particular one came from my mother who purchased it at a small specialty shop down in Atlantic City.
I say the lesser known name, the better! You want something that’s as pure as possible, otherwise you’ll literally be eating artificially flavored, packaged garbage. If you have local farms/farmers markets, I suggest going there for “the goods.”
