While it may be disheartening and revealing to people’s personalities, there is a time and a place for this common woe.
Stealing breakfast’s thunder: enter stage right: Steel cut oats. These plain looking oats are nothing by themselves, but when adding in the right ingredients: cinnamon, honey, brown sugar, fresh fruit, and vanilla extract, it is a winning combination. See below.
Previous to what your local grocer wants you to believe, General Mills does not hold the nutritional grail when it comes to breakfast cereal/oatmeal.
Packed with more sugar than a baker knows what to do with, those options labeled, “High source of calcium and vitamin C” are not ideal for the body. Why do you think the labeling is so boldfaced and huge on the front of the box? So it will deter the less knowledgeable consumer from turning to the back of the box and seeing the cold hard facts: less vitamin C than advertised, no fiber, high sugars, and HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. Yuck!
The next time you make a trip down the processed breakfast foods aisle, opt for a healthier, more nutritional choice…Steel cut oats. They are pretty expensive but a worthy investment. Traditionally cooked on the stovetop, these oats pack a mean punch and will set your healthy eating for the rest of the day.
First off, they are higher in fiber than most other oatmeals. They also contain more protein, maganese, and selenium than others. These are necessary for proper cell oxidation and function. Also- no sugar crashes with these.
As you can see, the protein and dietary fiber are higher than a typically popular oatmeal. Fiber keeps you fuller for longer and combined with protein allows your body to function all the way until lunch without stomach growls or fatigue. There are no added sugars, so you can add a little yourself.
You can also use these brands: McCann’s and Arrowhead Mills as they also haven’t been tainted by the FDA’s mass production “we don’t care about America” bug.
Here are some tasty ways to utilize nutrient rich steel cut oats:
- use 1 tbsp. of agave sweetener
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 seconds of drizzled honey
- one pinch cinnamon
- fresh/frozen fruit
- 1 spoonful of mascarpone
- cut up and melt 1/4 of a hard chocolate bar and melt in the microwave, then pour over.
- 1 large scoop peanut butter
- 1/3 cup shredded coconut
- a few pinches of light brown sugar
Steel cut oats cook within 3-5 minutes. So even if you’re running late for work they will not impede your timeliness. The girl at the office who always ends up stealing your thunder: now that, that I cannot promise will not happen.
Peace, love, and steel cut oats!
