You rush from work to the gym to change into appropriate apparel, step outside the locker room and forget headphones. Feverishly, you run back into the locker room. (All with only 5 minutes to spare to ensure you’ll get YOUR treadmill before the 5:30 P.M. rush) Tear open locker. Rifle through gym bag and the only thing remotely similar you can find are thin hair ties…which won’t do a whole lot for your restless mind.
How do people workout to the sound of chatter, machines, and musclehead grunts? I’ll continue to analyze those who bop happily along on their cardio machines with no sign of distraction.
I have read many articles which claim listening to music is detrimental to a workout. The reason being is that it distracts us from focusing on heavy breathing and proper form, thus resulting in waiting for the chorus line instead of tuning in on toning our trouble spots. I tend to disagree and think the opposite. Without music, um working out? Yeah, that might as well only be walking to the refrigerator and back to the couch. Music fuels my competitive edge and enables me to envision a better “me”.
Running on the “‘dreadmill” only works if I’m blaring Beyonce, Busta Rhymes, Wu Tang, or Drake. The elliptical makes me feel like Charlie Chaplin without some Gaga, and weight machines no longer are a “man’s world” when Rihanna’s “I’m so hard…” creeps into my eardrums.
